Akbar Padamsee, who graduated at Sir J.J. School of Art in 1940, is an accomplished artist known for his paintings, sculptures, films, and writings as an art critic. While his paintings are widely recognized, he has also ventured into different art forms, such as creating non-figurative “metascapes”, mirror images, figures, and heads. The metascapes are an evolution from his landscapes, and his mirror images reflect his fascination with the duality of existence, form, and space. He treats the figure as a universal symbol, and has only created portraits once, in his Gandhi series of 1997. Padamsee’s innovative spirit has led him to experiment with various mediums, from traditional to computer graphics. Regardless of the medium, he demonstrates mastery over space, form, and color.
The artist currently lives and works in Mumbai, India.
