Alex de Fluvià was a multidisciplinary artist whose work reflected a rich synthesis of global cultural influences and deep Mediterranean roots. He studied Art History at the University of Barcelona and photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York.
De Fluvià’s distinctive style combined intricate calligraphic patterns, expressive gestural mark-making, and collage techniques incorporating patterned papers, textiles, and found materials. His artistic journey included a formative year in Cairo, where he studied Arabic calligraphy and embraced the rhythm and repetition of arabesque forms, layering them in compositions reminiscent of mashrabiya screens. Later, his studies in Tokyo introduced him to the discipline of Japanese calligraphy (Shodo), which deeply influenced the sweeping strokes and meditative quality of his later works.
His art continues to resonate for its contemplative fusion of tradition and abstraction.
