Baiju Parthan, born in Kerala, is a prominent painter of intermedia art in India. Initially trained as an engineer, Parthan transitioned into the art world in 1974 after discovering a book on Western art. His journey into painting gave him a sense of self-worth, allowing him to explore various artistic movements like Impressionism and Cubism. Parthan’s experiences in Goa exposed him to alternate worldviews, blending Western art influences with Indian mysticism, tantra, and mythology. After a brief hiatus from painting in the 1980s, Parthan returned in the 1990s, incorporating mandalas and Tibetan tangas into his work. He later delved into the intersection of technology and art, exploring themes like post-humanism and the influence of machines on human identity.
The artist currently lives and works in Mumbai, India.
