Jean-Michel Basquiat was a New York–based neo-expressionist artist celebrated for his raw, energetic fusion of text, imagery, and social commentary. Rising from the streets of Manhattan as part of the graffiti duo SAMO, he quickly transitioned into the international art scene, becoming one of the youngest artists to exhibit at Documenta and the Whitney Biennial. His bold visual language explored themes of identity, race, power, and cultural history, marked by recurring motifs such as crowns, skulls, and expressive figures. Collaborations with Andy Warhol and major gallery exhibitions cemented his status as a defining voice of 1980s contemporary art.
The artist lived and worked in New York, USA.
