Samir Mondal is an acclaimed Indian watercolour painter known for his continual revival of the medium in modern Indian art. Born in Balti, West Bengal, Mondal graduated in fine arts from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, in 1975 and pursued higher studies in Germany.
Mondal’s most significant contribution to art is elevating watercolours to the status of oil paintings. By keenly observing the characteristics of oils, he incorporated their richness and substance into watercolours, developing textures and structural features that were previously unimaginable. His works maintain their originality, innovativeness, and classic elegance while embracing modernity.
Starting his solo career in 1980, Mondal settled in Mumbai after a brief period in Bangalore. By 1987, he was illustrating political cartoons in watercolour for the Illustrated Weekly of India. Over the past four decades, he has showcased his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including the National Art Exhibition of Lalit Kala Akademi, Delhi, and international galleries in London, New York, and Nepal.
Notable works include painting two watercolours for the 2007 Hindi film “Taare Zameen Par.” Mondal has received multiple awards, including accolades from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, and the AIFACS All India Exhibition, New Delhi. His innovative watercolours continue to inspire and influence the global art community.
The artist currently lives and works in Mumbai, India.
