Shyamal Mukherjee, born in 1963 in West Bengal, India, is a leading Bengali contemporary artist known for his joyful and instantly engaging visual language. He trained at Santiniketan and earned his B.F.A. (1987) and M.F.A. (1989) from Rabindra Bharati University. Working primarily with reverse oil and acrylic painting on transparent sheets, his practice draws inspiration from everyday life and Bengali folk culture. His humorous, warm figures—often bordering on caricature—are best known through the iconic Baba and Beebi imagery. Mukherjee has held over 36 solo exhibitions internationally, and his works are held in prominent private collections in India and abroad.
